Mississippi Homeowner Receives $15K Grant for Storm-Resistant Roof from FHLB Dallas and Guaranty Bank

Demetrius Perryman, a disabled homeowner living on a fixed income, has a new FORTIFIED-designated roof to protect her family from severe weather. Funded with a $15,000 FHLB Dallas FORTIFIED Fund grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) and its member Guaranty Bank, the roof has stopped water intrusion and prevented further deterioration of the home.

Ms. Perryman’s daughter, Markedia Perryman, said their insurance claim for roof repairs or replacement was denied due to the age of the roof, leaving the home vulnerable to repeated leaks.

“When it rained, rain would come through the home,” she said. “The condition of the roof was deteriorating and causing damage inside the house.”

She said the grant made an immediate difference. “Everything is perfect,” she added. “Getting the new roof stopped additional damage and relieved a lot of stress for my mom.”

The FHLB Dallas FORTIFIED Fund allocated $10 million this year for homeowners to receive grants up to $17,000 for roof replacements. All grants are awarded through FHLB Dallas financial institution members.

“At Guaranty Bank we are committed to supporting families in our community and helping homeowners like Ms. Demetrius Perryman strengthen their homes,” said Guaranty Bank Assistant Community Development Officer Chandra Hines. “This relationship with FHLB Dallas allows us to make a meaningful and lasting impact.”

The FHLB Dallas FORTIFIED Fund was established as a result of a need in FHLB Dallas’ five-state District.

“We are investing in resilience,” said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas. “The FHLB Dallas FORTIFIED Fund is one more tool to help homeowners and communities be better prepared for the next storm.”

The FORTIFIED designation was developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) and is a voluntary program to strengthen homes against severe weather. Visit the FHLB Dallas FORTIFIED Fund to learn more about eligibility requirements and application information.

“There is help out there,” Markedia Perryman said. “Don’t give up looking. Just keep asking; you never know who might know someone who can help you.”
